SLOANE: A JAZZ SINGER The Documentary Film | SLOANE: A JAZZ SINGER, the Documentary Film (Virtual Showcase 2A): In 1961, singer Carol Sloane became an overnight sensation at the famed Newport Jazz Festival. A natural interpreter of the Great American Songbook, she was hailed by Johnny Carson and the Washington Post as “the world’s greatest living jazz singer” and toured with the biggest names in the genre, including Oscar Peterson and Ella Fitzgerald. She even befriended The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, traveling with them on their first US tours. Yet today, most people have never heard of Carol Sloane. The British rock invasion swept America, and Carol’s rising star faded as quickly as it had risen, paving the way for devastating financial and emotional setbacks that would follow her the rest of her life. In this multi-"Best Documentary” award-winning film, we follow Carol Sloane at age 82 as she prepares for one final live recording at New York's iconic Birdland. Sharing rare archival footage, intimate moments with Sloane at her small apartment near Boston, and enlightening commentary from musicians and industry leaders, the film reveals a singular artist’s devotion to her passion against great odds and invites all of us to examine the meaning of success in a world where, all too frequently, "art don't pay." In this showcase, Donna will introduce you to some of the characters who will feature in both the family performances and the adult-oriented shows she offers. You'll meet the witch from Hansel and Gretel as a child, the ugliest woman in Christendom, peek into a graveyard under the full moon, visit Donna's great grandparents in segregated Texas, and encounter a frog who is pretty sure he is the largest creature on the pond! In fifteen minutes, she will move you through laughter, suspense, fear, and wonder as she shares a taste of each of these possible shows with you. If you can be captured by a brief glimpse, imagine what can happen within a full hour! As one young audience member recently said, “The only thing that would have made this better is if there had been puppies!” Photo By: Jonathan Van Ark Check out Donna Washington |
